In the Line of Duty

Their stalwart stance on mountain ridges proves
the honor of the colors that they wear;
and valiantly, entrenched in concrete grooves,
they shade our heat-embedded thoroughfares.

They capture golden solar rays and guide
the soft exchange of molecules; they blend
converging veins of earth and air, provide
a source of life on which we all depend.

We strip them bare; count dollars as they fall.
But still, determinedly, the young ones rise --
to answer nature's silent greening call
and stand, resplendent, under smog-filled skies.
